Each search engine has a selection on their site to submit, add or suggest a new site or page. We strongly recommend that you follow any instructions that are provided. There are now over 1,550 search engines worldwide. But don't let the high number deceive you. Most people use only the top 10 or so search engines.
As you submit to different search engines you will see that they may or may not use the same methods. Some like Infoseek require that you submit the site one page at a time. Others like Altavista request that you only submit the main index page and their software will follow all the links. Yahoo! has real people review the site you submit and they do not use spiders or webcrawlers.
Therefore be concerned, not with getting into all the search engines but rather getting into a good spot with the most important ones that everyone uses.
